As happy as you allow yourself to be

It is not easy to understand this paradigm. If we are in control of how happy we can be, how come we are usually not happy?

For hundreds of years, people have been searching for that elusive state of happiness, contentment, peace.  And all of us have experienced some micro-moments, if not many, where we have felt that state of bliss. And while we may find ways to experience it, we lose that state easily to external factors.

But how we lose it? Can we maintain it? Or is it always a pursuit?

One way to reduce the impact of external factors is zone management.

  1.  Becoming aware of your zone: There is a sacred space which you own. The ‘Best of yourself’ zone. You have 100% accountability here. Here you can enhance self growth and development, by focusing on your own intentions, building and leveraging your strengths, creating new habits, finding creative paths and sourcing new teachers. The foundational step in building this zone is acknowledging yourself. So yes, the world will still suck! But if you direct your efforts on nurturing this zone, you can navigate through life with ease.
  2. Becoming aware of interactive zones: So you will still interact with the world, there will be situations where you will participate and interact. Your accountability here is reduced than the previous zone, but you still have an opportunity. This is where you can practice how to shift from ‘React to Respond to Embrace’. By focusing on the clarity of distance, you can dilute and rationalise perceived threat value. You can listen more and calibrate your action and commitment.
  3. Becoming aware of experience zones: This zone is similar to a video parlour with multiple game zones and players. This is the most outward zone featuring more people and situations where your accountability is shared and even less than the earlier zones. In this zone you have to focus on understanding the big picture, the personalities, the dynamics and the trends. This is where you practice restraint.

    You can avoid the seduction of pleasing or solving, you can gather consensus, you can choose to focus on team work, dynamics and goals, rather than getting limited by individuals and circumstances. 

Self awareness is the first step in the direction to channelise your resources and faculty. And if you practice going back with learning from the interactive and experience zones to the personal zone and weave it into your self growth story, you become stronger and over time immune from the external factors that sometimes derail our path to happiness and peace.
